Terms of service

Effective July 24, 2026

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) form an agreement between you and Joshua Tonga, an individual based in the Philippines who operates WriteButler (“WriteButler”, “we”, “us”, or “our”). They govern your access to and use of www.writebutler.com, the WriteButler desktop app, and related services (collectively, the “Service”).

Please read these Terms and our Privacy Policy before using the Service. If you do not agree, do not install, access, or use the Service.

1. Acceptance and eligibility

When we present a button, checkbox, or similar control asking you to accept these Terms, the agreement is formed when you affirmatively accept. If no acceptance control is presented, the agreement is formed when you first install or use the desktop app after the Terms have been made reasonably available to you and you have had an opportunity to review them. If applicable law requires another step for contract formation, the agreement is formed only when that requirement is met.

You must be at least 18 years old and legally able to enter into this agreement. The Service is not directed to anyone under 18. If you use the Service for an employer or another organization, you confirm that you have authority to bind that organization; “you” then includes both you and that organization.

2. The Service and free beta

WriteButler is a desktop AI writing assistant. It can process screen regions or text you choose, together with optional context, voice, and tone settings, to suggest, compose, vary, refine, and regenerate written replies. The app may also keep local history, learn from replies you copy when that setting is enabled, and synchronize manual voice samples and custom tones across signed-in devices.

The current early-access Service is a free beta and may be limited to invited users. We do not currently accept payments or offer paid subscriptions. Accepting these Terms does not authorize us to charge you or automatically enroll you in a future paid plan. Before paid plans launch, we will provide updated or additional terms covering prices, billing, renewal, cancellation, refunds, and taxes and obtain any acceptance required by law.

Compatibility and limits

The current public beta supports macOS and X11-based Linux environments. Windows and Wayland are not currently supported. Compatibility may depend on your device, operating-system version, display configuration, permissions, and third-party software.

Current default generation limits are 10 requests per minute and 200 requests per UTC day. A suggestion, refinement, or variations request counts as one request when admitted for processing. We may adjust, enforce, or introduce reasonable limits to protect security, capacity, fairness, or beta availability. Limits are not a promise of minimum usage or availability.

3. Accounts

Some features require an invited WriteButler account and Google sign-in through our authentication provider. We receive limited account information from Google but do not receive your Google password. You must provide accurate information, protect access to your Google account and device, and promptly tell us at hello@writebutler.com if you believe your WriteButler account or session has been compromised.

You may not sell, transfer, share, or create accounts through automated or deceptive means. You are responsible for activity performed through your account unless it resulted from our breach of duty or another circumstance for which applicable law makes us responsible.

4. Desktop app license

Subject to these Terms, we grant you a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable, and non-sublicensable license to download, install, and use the WriteButler desktop app on devices you own or control for your personal use or internal business purposes.

You may not, except where applicable law expressly permits it:

  • copy, modify, translate, distribute, sell, rent, lease, sublicense, or commercially exploit the app;
  • reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or try to derive source code or non-public service logic;
  • remove or obscure copyright, trademark, attribution, or other proprietary notices; or
  • use the app to build or train a competing product by extracting non-public software, prompts, or service behavior.

Open-source components are governed by their applicable licenses, which may give you additional rights. Those licenses control if they conflict with this section for the relevant component.

5. WriteButler ownership

WriteButler and its licensors own the Service, including its software, source code, interfaces, website content, designs, documentation, prompts, branding, logos, and other materials, excluding your inputs, AI-generated output as addressed below, and third-party or open-source materials. These Terms grant only the limited rights expressly stated and reserve all other rights.

“WriteButler” is the public product and brand name. It is not represented in these Terms as a registered company, corporation, or United States entity.

6. Your inputs

You retain ownership of screen captures, drafts, instructions, writing samples, custom tones, replies, and other material you provide to the Service (“Inputs”). You grant WriteButler a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, copy, transmit, analyze, and technically modify Inputs only as reasonably necessary to provide, secure, troubleshoot, and support the features you request, honor your settings, and comply with law. This license ends when the relevant processing and permitted retention end, except where continued retention is legally required or reasonably needed to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.

You confirm that you have the rights, permissions, and lawful basis needed to provide each Input and to permit its processing. This includes permission to use workplace, customer, confidential, copyrighted, personal, or third-party content. Do not submit content that you are prohibited from disclosing or processing.

We do not claim ownership of your Inputs and do not use them to train a WriteButler general-purpose AI model. Our Privacy Policy explains how Inputs are processed by WriteButler and its service providers.

7. AI-generated output

WriteButler uses third-party AI providers, currently OpenAI or Anthropic, to produce suggested text (“Output”). As between you and WriteButler, you may use Output for lawful personal or internal business purposes. To the extent WriteButler has intellectual-property rights in Output created for you, we assign those rights to you.

That assignment does not give you rights in third-party material or guarantee that Output is copyrightable, protectable, non-infringing, or exclusive to you. AI systems can produce the same or similar output for different users and can generate incorrect, incomplete, outdated, biased, offensive, misleading, or unlawful material.

You are responsible for reviewing and, where appropriate, editing, fact-checking, and obtaining professional advice before relying on, copying, pasting, publishing, or sending Output. Do not treat Output as legal, medical, financial, employment, or other professional advice. You are responsible for how you use Output and for communications you send.

8. Capture, clipboard, and system permissions

Capture is user-initiated: after you invoke the feature, the app captures the screen region you select. On macOS, capture requires Screen Recording permission. The app may inspect the foreground app name and window title locally to infer a broad writing context; raw app names and titles are not sent to the generation service, although the normalized context category may be.

Selecting an Output writes it to your clipboard. If you enable paste-on-copy, the app may use macOS Accessibility permission to return focus to the previous app and paste the selected Output. WriteButler does not click a Send, Post, or Submit control for you. You remain responsible for reviewing the pasted text and deciding whether to send it.

You must obtain any permission needed to capture, process, copy, or paste content displayed by another app, account, employer, customer, or person. You can deny or revoke operating-system permissions, but affected features may not work.

9. Local and synchronized data

Depending on your settings, History, learned voice examples, and app settings may be stored as ordinary local application files on your device. Local History is not separately encrypted by WriteButler. Manual voice samples and custom tones may be synchronized through your account. The Privacy Policy describes these practices, retention, service-provider processing, and available controls in more detail.

You are responsible for protecting your device and maintaining any backup you need. Turning off History prevents new history entries but does not delete existing entries; use the app's clear-history control to remove them. Uninstalling the app or losing a device may result in the loss of local data.

10. Prohibited uses

You may not use or help others use the Service to:

  • violate law, court orders, contracts, intellectual-property, privacy, publicity, confidentiality, or other rights;
  • generate, facilitate, or distribute harmful, fraudulent, deceptive, defamatory, discriminatory, exploitative, abusive, or otherwise illegal content;
  • impersonate another person, misrepresent AI-generated text as a person's authentic statement, send spam, or conduct phishing or other social engineering;
  • capture or submit sensitive, confidential, workplace, customer, or third-party content without the authority and safeguards required for that content;
  • make decisions with legal or similarly significant effects on a person without qualified human review and appropriate lawful safeguards;
  • introduce malware, probe or compromise security, interfere with the Service, or access another user's account or data;
  • bypass usage limits, invite controls, authentication, permissions, or other technical restrictions;
  • automate access, scrape non-public material, or overload the Service without our written permission; or
  • sell, transfer, or misrepresent access to an account.

A restriction does not prohibit activity that applicable law expressly allows despite a contractual restriction. Contact us before security research so we can agree on a safe scope.

11. Feedback and issue reports

If you submit an idea, suggestion, or product feedback, you grant us a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable, and sublicensable license to use, modify, and incorporate that feedback into WriteButler without compensation or attribution. This license covers product ideas, not ownership of personal information, confidential materials, screenshots, or diagnostic content included with a support submission.

Feedback and issue reports may include a rating, message, app version, platform, and optional screenshot or diagnostics. Do not include trade secrets, credentials, or sensitive third-party content unless it is necessary and you are authorized to share it. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle these submissions.

12. Third-party services and open-source software

The Service depends on third parties, including Google, Supabase, OpenAI, Anthropic, Aptabase, Loops, Plausible, Vercel, operating-system providers, and open-source software projects. Their services, availability, and terms may affect WriteButler. Your use of Google sign-in, AI features, or another connected service may also be subject to that provider's applicable terms and privacy notices.

We do not control third-party services and are not responsible for them beyond responsibilities that applicable law does not allow us to exclude. Third-party and open-source names and marks belong to their respective owners and do not imply sponsorship or endorsement.

13. Beta availability, changes, and termination

The Service is an early-access beta. Features may be incomplete, experimental, changed, limited, suspended, or discontinued. We do not promise uninterrupted availability, a service level, response time, support schedule, or that any beta feature will become generally available. We will use reasonable efforts to give notice of a material discontinuation when practical.

You may stop using and uninstall the app at any time. Contact us to request account deletion. We may restrict, suspend, or terminate access when reasonably necessary to address a Terms violation, abuse, security risk, legal requirement, provider restriction, or material risk to the Service or others. Where practical and lawful, we will give notice and an opportunity to address the issue.

On termination, the license in section 4 ends. Sections that by their nature should survive—including ownership, feedback, disclaimers, liability limits, disputes, and general terms—remain effective.

14. Disclaimers

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Service is provided “as is” and “as available”. We do not promise that it will be uninterrupted, secure, error-free, or compatible with every system, or that errors or data loss will be corrected or recoverable.

We do not warrant that AI-generated Output is accurate, complete, current, unique, lawful, non-infringing, or suitable for a particular purpose. You must independently review Output and exercise judgment before using it.

Nothing in these Terms excludes a statutory warranty, remedy, or consumer right that cannot lawfully be excluded or waived.

15. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, neither you nor WriteButler will be liable under these Terms for indirect, incidental, special, exemplary, punitive, or consequential loss, or for lost profits, revenue, goodwill, business opportunity, or data, where that loss was not reasonably foreseeable when the agreement was formed.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, WriteButler's total aggregate liability arising from or relating to the Service or these Terms will not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you paid WriteButler for the Service during the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim or (b) US$100 or its local-currency equivalent.

These exclusions and limits do not apply to fraud, willful misconduct, gross negligence, death or personal injury caused by negligence, infringement or misappropriation for which liability cannot lawfully be limited, or any other liability or remedy that applicable law does not allow the parties to exclude or limit.

16. Governing law and dispute resolution

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Philippines, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, except that mandatory consumer protections in your place of residence continue to apply when the law says they must.

Before filing a court claim, please email a description of the dispute to hello@writebutler.com. You and WriteButler will try in good faith to resolve it informally for 30 days. This step does not prevent either party from seeking urgent relief, filing a consumer or regulatory complaint, or acting before a legal time limit expires.

If the dispute is not resolved, either party may bring it before a court in the Philippines that has proper subject-matter and territorial jurisdiction under applicable law. Nothing in these Terms prevents a consumer from using another court, tribunal, agency, or remedy that mandatory law makes available. These Terms do not require arbitration and do not include a class-action waiver.

17. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms to reflect changes to the Service, business, or law. The effective date at the top identifies the current version. We will provide reasonable notice of material changes through the website, app, or email, as appropriate, and will request renewed acceptance when the nature of the change or applicable law requires it.

Changes apply prospectively from their stated effective date and do not remove rights or liabilities that already accrued. If you do not agree to an updated version, you must stop using the Service when it takes effect.

18. General terms

These Terms and any additional terms we expressly present for a feature are the entire agreement about the Service. The Privacy Policy explains our data practices and does not reduce any right or obligation imposed by applicable law.

If a provision is unlawful or unenforceable, it will be enforced to the maximum lawful extent and the remaining provisions will continue. A delay in enforcing a provision is not a waiver. You may not transfer this agreement without our written consent. We may transfer it to a successor in connection with a genuine reorganization, financing, sale, or transfer of WriteButler, provided that your mandatory rights are preserved and any required notice is given.

These Terms do not create an employment, agency, partnership, franchise, fiduciary, or joint-venture relationship. Headings are for convenience only.

19. Contact and complaints

For questions, complaints, account-deletion requests, or notices about these Terms, email hello@writebutler.com. Include enough information for us to understand and investigate the issue, but do not send credentials or sensitive documents unless we ask for them through an appropriate channel.
